so i was thinking today, about how Dirk is usually portrayed as a typical uber-stoic Strider who doesn’t let anything show on his face ever ‘cause he’s calculating and a bit manipulative. And that’s cute in its own way, but we all know how the Striders are basically giant goobers on the inside. Dirk grew up having zero experience dealing with people. And I know that, for me, things come across a lot softer and it’s way easier to deal with comments on the computer (compliments especially, oh my god, although maybe not flaming, that can be worse because you add the tone yourself, and, y'know. you're your own worst critic, etc etc). When someone is talking to you, and you have to look them in the eye, and you get their voice and their body language and you have to see their eyes and listen to them and then if they have dimples or freckles or an accent, and there are all these other cues that you don’t get online, and you don’t have time to come up with an appropriate, calm response? it is way harder. And things are always EXTREMELY different in actuality than whatever I envision in my head beforehand. Goodness, the number of times I have played through conversations dozens of times in my head and then tried to talk to someone and gone "uhhh-HERPDERP. wordfail."

so, tl;dr: what if when Dirk meets people (read: Jake, the dude he’s had a gigantic thing for for three years) and instead of being calm, cool, and collected he is a giant emotional mess because of the overload?

also I STILL CAN'T PICK A FAVE KID IT'S NOT POSSIBLE not as bad for the alphas as the betas but sTILL. I chose Dirk tho 'cause of the whole Your Shit Is Wrecked flash, which. Oh man. It was just so excellent.
